Prolific filmmaker Xavier Dolan shot to attention with debut feature I Killed My Mother. Mommy, the Canadian’s fifth effort, is every bit as visceral. Single mum Diane must manage Steve, her unruly ADHD son, who’s just been expelled. With Steve back at home on a full-time basis, the pair’s fractured relationship has a chance to repair. The film’s 1:1 aspect ratio lends it an intense feel, as seen through the eyes of its incongruous protagonists.
