BFI’s 13th greatest British film of the 20th Century for your eyes onlyThe Ladykillers sees five diverse oddball criminal types planning a bank robbery rent rooms in Kings Cross from an octogenarian widow with an active imagination and a raucous parrot, under the pretext that they are classical musicians practicing Boccherini’s Minuet (well, sort of). When their landlady discovers the robbery and her tenants’ deceit the incompetent criminal quintet hatch a plan to do away with her. Surely nothing can go wrong. If its selection by the Herne Hill Free Film Festival team is not endorsement enough, it was also voted the 5th greatest comedy of all time and the BFI’s 13th greatest British film of the 20th Century. Plus it had the Coen Brothers doffing their caps with a remake (starring Tom Hanks in the role of the original’s Alec Guinness) in 2004.
