London Philharmonic Orchestra: Sublime Polish Melodies

Górecki's sublime melodies inspired by grief, sorrow + folk

The Southbank Centre’s The Rest Is Noise series looks at the great and good of contemporary composition in the 20th century. Tonight’s focus is on Henryk Górecki. In the mid-1970s, he put together a pretty harrowing piece, bringing together traditional Polish folk music with a more classical edge. Understandingly the subtitle of his Symphony Number 3 is Symphony of Sorrowful Songs. If you get down early, there’s a free pre-concert talk discussing this evening’s programme which will help put the music into context. Seating allocated on arrival. Latecomers may not be admitted. Free pre-concert event, 6:15pm-6:45pm in the Royal Festival Hall.
