An otherworldly new composition from the Dutch dreamweaver
Michel van der Aa is a unique contemporary composer who fuses his music into its surroundings. Like some kind of collision between Space Odyssey and an Escher sketch, Here embodies the stark black obelisk present on an empty stage. This a mysterious trilogy of works featuring a shuffling tape recorder, an anonymous figure, and just eleven repeated chords. There'll also be the world premiere of his new clarinet concerto, Hysteresis. Seating allocated on arrival. Pro tip: if you've got a bit of extra time, arrive at 6:15pm for a Composer Conversation with Michel, and/or attend the post-concert drinks at Hayward Gallery's Concrete Bar, with Michel and the players.
"One of the most distinctive young composers in Europe today."
