Opium Brides Screening + Q&A

An in-depth look into a deplorable yet modern business practice

Afghanistan produces 90% of the world’s opium. A jarring, but very real fact. As the government’s been destroying opium crops through its eradication program lately, drug smugglers aren’t taking no for an answer. The proposition for the farmers? Pay back the money they’ve lost by losing ‘their’ crops or give up one of the family’s young daughters as a ‘bride’. With close associations to fundamentalist groups like the Taliban, these drug dealers have but one purpose for this trade. Watch this shocking documentary led by award-winning Afghan journalist Najibullah Quraishi as she reveals the deadly bargain local farmers are being forced to make. Bonus: the screening will be followed by a Q&A with Quraishi and producer Jamie Doran, so get ready to grill them on the serious stuff. General admission. Please arrive on time.
