2014's best film in stunning surroundings
Situated in the heart of East London, Pillow Cinema have transformed the rooftop of SNAP Studios, overlooking Shoreditch Park, into a cosy space filled with fatboy bean bags. This is perhaps the loveliest, comfiest, cosiest cinema experience this side of a fluffy cloud. Tonight's offering is the winner of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography at 2014’s Oscars, Birdman. Birdman, or The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance, is a black comedy that tell the story of a former cinema superhero Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton). With the help of his best friend and lawyer Jake (Zach Galifianakis), Riggan is mounting an ambitious Broadway production which he hopes will breathe new life into his stagnant career. As the opening night approaches, a castmate is injured, forcing Riggan to hire an actor (Edward Norton) who is guaranteed to shake things up; and shake things up he does. The result is an intellectually challenging and visually stunning film that tests the limits of cinema and questions the meaning of acting in the modern age. Pretty deep, but also pretty dam good. "As soon as it ends, you'll be dying to fly with it again." – Time Out "Birdman is everything you want movies to be: vital, challenging, intellectually alive, visually stunning, emotionally affecting." – Empire Certificate: 15.
