Roller derby is a full contact sport, it is played on quad roller skates on an oval shaped flat track. The teams each field 5 skaters onto the track for two minutes of play, called a 'jam.' The game runs for a total of 60 minutes with two 30 minute halves. Out of the 5 skaters fielded, 4 are named Blockers and 1 is called the Jammer.
The aim is for the Jammers to race each other to get past the blockers on the track first. The blockers will aid their Jammer by playing offense and will also prevent the opposition Jammer by playing defense. The blockers play offense by engaging in contact with the opposition blockers to try and clear a path for their Jammer, they play defense by creating a wall with their bodies to close the paths for the opposition Jammer. When a Jammer gets out first, they are whistled the 'Lead Jammer' by the ref. This gives them the power to end the jam when they see strategically fit. The Jammers are the point scorers. They score points by skating past the blockers, each blocker is worth 1 point. The Jammers earn their points on their second time around the track.
