[C] Take Root With Gina Graham's Esse Aficionado
Where technology meets dance
While the era of the VHS is right up there with floppy disks, modern dance company Esse Aficionado is putting analog video to good use. Headed by Gina Graham, the troupe converts dusty reams of VHS tape into art in this performance that doubles as an ode to the outdated form. Taking a cue from sculptor Eva Hesse’s "Untitled Rope Piece," performers are draped in lightweight reams of tape as they twist their torsos. Gives a whole new meaning to roll tape, huh? General admission. Please arrive on time."Esse Aficionado is led by three Purchase College graduates who are certainly — as the name suggests — passionate devotees of dance."
