Who’s in the box?

The Dutch

In an increasingly mall-ified Soho, virtuoso Andrew Camellini’s (Bar Primi, Locanda Verde) deeply personal homage to the American melting pot feels electric. The cosmopolitan brasserie’s menu veers from gorgeous picked crab and tender duck breast to crispy fried chicken and rabbit potpie steaming under a showstopping dome of crackerlike crust.

Dirty French

Created by Major Food Group innovators Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi and Jeff Zalaznick, Dirty French is the chain-smoking Parisian bistro to Carbone’s three-card-monte palazzo, situated in the Ludlow Hotel. A vaguely ’80s thread weaves through French’s dining room: Hot pink powers the Dirty Dancing–esque neon sign that announces the entryway, while ivory busts of nondescript figures peer from the vaulted ceilings. Take it all in over oysters du jour or velvety lamb carpaccio.

A Basque term of endearment meaning “little one,” Txikito (pronounced “chi-KEE-toe”) celebrates Spain’s small-plate cuisine. Instead of the standard-issue tapas most New York diners are used to, chef Alex Raij and Eder Montero (El Quinto Pino, La Vara) whip up adventurous fare: a musky bowl of tendons, trotters or tripe; fried, breaded beef tongue, spring-roll wrappers filled with spicy blood sausage and offal stew.

Mermaid Inn or Mermaid Oyster Bar

Greenwich Village, East Village, UWS

Danny Abram’s cozy, urban fish shack is making waves in the East Village and the Upper West Side. Serving up classic seafood staples such as whole grilled branzino, pan-roasted Faroe Islands salmon and beer-battered fish tacos. The Mermaid Inn’s sister, nestled in Greenwich Village, offers these New England go-tos and more, with a selection of East and West Coast oysters.

Mountain Bird or GAUDIr

Tuesday through Sunday, Husband-and-wife team Kenichi and Keiko Tajima helm this poultry-focused Harlem nook at Tastings Social. Within the 31-seat, jazz-soundtracked dining room, every manner of bird is broken down and judiciously used. Or head in on Mondays, when Tastings Social opens its doors as GAUDIr, a modern Spanish tapas joint headed by chef Cedric Durand (L’Amphitryon, Payard). From 6pm to 10pm, this space offers selections like creamy croquettes of chorizo, hearty lamb meatballs and perfectly salted bacalao.

Tastings Social, 251 E 110th St

Sushi Seki

Hell’s Kitchen, Chelsea

Locals, sushi snobs and off-duty chefs alike crawl in to this completely conventional facade on First Ave until 2:30 a.m. to sample an original selection of raw fish. The Sushi Seki formula: unusually flavored variants of popular sushi cuts (milky king salmon, medium-fat tuna, chopped, deep-fried egg) complemented by subtle sauces. Pro tip: Try the jalapeño atop yellowtail, the oniony tofu sauce over leaner tuna or the snow crab bathed in sesame oil.

The Little Beet

Times Square

A healthy spin on lunch flourishes at this wood-paneled takeout spot. Along with gluten-free items and freshly pressed juices, the menu includes a toothsome bowl of beet falafel and squash (organic quinoa, roasted kale, cranberries, chickpeas, beet hummus, turmeric tahini sauce, turmeric almonds), a yuzu poke bowl (salmon poke, brown rice, chipotle slaw, golden beets, kale, avocado, sesame seeds, yuzu vinaigrette, pickled ginger).
