Barry Crimmins: Seeking Political Asylum Tour

the USA’s sharpest, left-wing comic

Lakin McCarthy presents Barry Crimmins, star of Bobcat Goldthwait's critically acclaimed 2015 Sundance-award-winning documentary, Call Me Lucky. Over the years, with his biting, acerbic wit, coupled with a sense of compassion rarely seen in stand up comedy, Barry Crimmins carved out a spot as the USA’s sharpest, left-wing comic. As a young and hungry comic in the early 80’s Barry Crimmins founded his own comedy club in Boston. Here he fostered the careers of new talent who we now know as Steven Wright, Paula Poundstone, Denis Leary, Lenny Clarke, Kevin Meaney, Bobcat Goldthwait, and many others. These comics were grateful for Barry’s fair pay and passionate support and respected him as a whip-smart comic but they also knew he could be difficult and almost inexplicably angry. Barry finally brought the personal into his political act with this onstage revelation that he had survived heinous assaults as a child. In the ensuing years he’s become an internationally renowned activist on behalf of children’s rights and safety. Barry has received the Peace Leadership Award as well as the Courage of Conscience Award alongside Dr. Maya Angelou. He was also honoured at Sundance in 2015, when the premiere of Call Me Lucky was received with three standing ovations. The crowd rising to cheer was living proof that Barry's story is universal, and that his steadfast courage will continue to change lives. But that won’t stop him from being hilarious. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Please arrive early as latecomers may not be admitted. Seating allocated upon arrival. Valid ID required. Runtime: 1 hour 15 minutes.
