BFI London Film Festival: The Goddess

Iconic silent film

It may be silent, but The Goddess has a lot to say. The seminal movie, which has been newly restored, features a stunning performance from Ruan Lingyu as a ‘goddess’ – a euphemism for a prostitute. The film is a moving drama in its own right, but there is an added poignancy in the knowledge that its star committed suicide at 24 just a year after its release. Director Wu Yonggang’s magnum opus is being shown as part of the Electric Shadows project celebrating Chinese and British artistic collaborations.
