BFI London Film Festival: The Lamb

Beautifully strange story

Artist, writer-director and all-round prodigy Kutluğ Ataman loves an unconventional drama. Set in the mountains of Eastern Antolia, The Lamb tells the story of Young Mert, who is ready to be circumcised complete with the celebratory banquet this entails. There’s just one problem: the lamb that the feast requires is beyond the means of Mert’s parents. If a lamb can’t be found, his older sister warns, Mert will have to be slaughtered and served to the guests instead. For all its oddness, The Lamb is a beautiful piece of cinema, with strong performances and a stunning Turkish winter landscape.
