BFI Preview: Brooklyn + Q&A With Director John Crowley

Nick Hornby’s adaptation of Colm Tóibín’s story of a young woman's independence

Eilis (Saoirse Ronan) faces a heart-rending choice. With scant opportunity for young women in post-WW2 small-town Ireland, Eilis emigrates to New York with the help of Father Flood (Jim Broadbent) and the support of her sister. Establishing herself in a job, overcoming loneliness and homesickness, she soon falls in love with adoring Italian-American Tony (Emory Cohen). Unexpected family tragedy sees her return to Ireland, where her new-found refinement and hard-earned independent poise attracts the attentions of Jim (Domhnall Gleeson) and the prospect of a permanent return to her much-loved home and family. Catch the first viewing of this stunning adaptation of Tóibín’s best-selling novel, as well as a Q&A with director John Crowley. Certificate: 12A. Running time: 1 hour 45 minutes.
