With its associated art forms, dance and shadow-puppet-theatre, it also reflects social hierarchy and community values across Indonesia. The beauty and complexity of the music has reverberated internationally and inspired a huge range of artists as varied as Claude Debussy, Olivier Messiaen, Benjamin Britten, Lou Harrison, Steve Reich, Louis Andriessen, David Byrne, Björk and Plaid.
