Gamelan Late + Live

Late night Gamelan that is good for the soul

For centuries, the gamelan music of Java and Bali has resonated across Indonesia; tonight, it will resonate across London's infamous Southbank Centre. Gamelan music has remained popular and relevant despite adapting to numerous colonial influences and religious and political changes across the nation. With its associated art forms, dance and shadow-puppet-theatre, it also reflects social hierarchy and community values across Indonesia. The beauty and complexity of the music has reverberated internationally and inspired a huge range of artists as varied as Claude Debussy, Olivier Messiaen, Benjamin Britten, Lou Harrison, Steve Reich, Louis Andriessen, David Byrne, Björk and Plaid. This event is free and entry is on a first come first served basis, so it can't be guaranteed. You need to be registered to store the event information in your profile, but rest assured, we won't charge you a penny.
