Time Out says
Prepare for an extraordinary night at Southbank’s Royal Festival Hall. Symphony Kūkai is an immersive choral experience inspired by the ninth-century journey of Buddhist monk Kūkai from Japan to China in search of spiritual truth. The evening unfolds as much as a moment of reflection as a concert.
Performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir with Beijing’s Central Conservatory Choir, the music moves from hushed calm to soaring orchestral and choral power. Under Japanese conductor Takuo Yuasa, Eastern and Western traditions blend into a sound that feels expansive, human and quietly hopeful—music about connection, compassion and common ground.
Arrive early on January 30 from 6.15pm for a free pre-concert talk with Dharmakārunyā (Ursula Tidd), who will be bringing Kūkai’s journey and the music’s spiritual ideas to life.
