London Philharmonic Orchestra Free Pre-Concert Event: Adapting Othello

Part of the Shakespeare 400 series

Dvořák was by no means singular in his artistic attraction to Shakespeare. Othello alone became a virtual obsession in the nineteenth century, and it’s central song The Willow Song - sung by Desdemona as she laments Othello’s inexplicable change of mood - is one of the most well-known and studied songs of the Shakespeare canon. Join Professor Russ McDonald, Goldsmiths, and Professor Clare McManus, University of Roehampton, as they reflect on Othello’s popularity with adaptors and composers, and its role as a lightning rod for perceptions of ethnicity, religion and gender. This event is free and entry is on a first come first served basis, so it can't be guaranteed. You need to be registered to store the event information in your profile, but rest assured, we won't charge you a penny. Talk lasts approximately 30 minutes.
