London Philharmonic Orchestra: The Mermaid

The LPO take on Zemlinsky's classic

Zemlinsky had a broken heart when he composed his orchestral tone poem based on the story of the Little Mermaid. But while the score’s depiction of the Little Mermaid’s hopeless dedication to an imaginary young boy clearly resonated with Zemlinsky, his work was no self-pitying tirade. Zemlinsky had glimpsed the triumph and joy of love himself, and thrust it into his magical, kaleidoscopic score. Also on the programme is Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, a stirring and beautiful piece performed here by brilliant Rachmaninoff interpreter, Marc-André Hamelin. Featuring: - Vladimir Jurowski conductor - Marc-André Hamelin piano - London Philharmonic Orchestra Please note that seats will be allocated on the night upon arrival.
