Paavo Järvi conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra through a fascinating programme of Russian masterworks. Today, these works are free of censorship, but that wasn't always the case. Shostakovich was backed into a corner when he penned his Fifth as an artist's respond to just criticism; while Rachmaninov's music was outlawed when he was declared an enemy of Russia.
The programme:
- Mikhail Glinka: Overture, Ruslan and Ludmilla
- Sergei Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No 3
- interval
- Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No 5
Seating allocated on arrival. Latecomers will only be admitted after the interval.
