Shuffle Film Festival: Time Of The Gypsies

Profound poetic lyricism

Shuffle Festival is an annual event which aims to build a more integrated community presence through art, comedy, music, food and film. Taking place in the Cantrell Field, tonight’s screening is the film which won Emir Kusturica the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival, Time Of The Gypsies. In this luminous tale set in the area around Sarajevo and Italy, Perhan, an engaging young Romany with telekinetic powers is seduced by the quick-cash world of petty crime. Pretty soon, this life threatens to destroy him and those he loves. This precise observation of gypsy life combines documentary-like realism with profound poetic lyricism in a way that had never been seen before, and has never been matched since. "Astonishing and deeply moving." – Time Out "Time of the Gypsies is not an easy movie to watch, it’s quite violent and in-your-face. However, it is directed in a way that manages to combine brutality with lyricism." – Unsung Films Certificate: 15. Valid ID required. Runtime: 2 hours 19 minutes.
