Stephen Malkmus was the pinup of '90s jangly guitar music, providing a safer alternative to Kurt Cobain with his lo-fi indie outfit Pavement. He’s now releasing his sixth studio album with The Jicks. He’s mellowed, he’s experimenting, and (like the American Jarvis Cocker he is) he’s lost none of that wry humour and ability to turn a phrase. Catch a legend while you can.
