The Beaux' Stratagem

No money and all the love

Meet Mr Aimwell and Mr Archer, two gentleman who epitomise the spirit of YOLO. This despite the fact that the acronym had yet to be popularised when the Beaux were blowing their fortune in 18th-century London. The duo attempt to flee their past, only to wind up facing an obstacle they hadn’t bargained on…love. George Farquhar’s final play is filled with tender moments and biting comedy. The Olivier − named after Laurence Olivier, the first director of the National Theatre (during its years at the Old Vic) and the outstanding British actor of the 20th century − is the largest of the three theatres at the National. In spite of its size, the Olivier has a concentrated intimacy. No seat is far from an actor's point of command; and the span of the seats matches their effective span of vision. ★★★★ – The Observer ★★★★ – Evening Standard ★★★★ – Time Out ★★★★ – The Guardian Runtime: 2 hours 40 minutes including interval.
