The Lost One

Enduring '50s flick portrays post-war Germany

Der Verlorene – or The Lost One – is a quirky German film written, directed by and starring Peter Lorre. Best known as an American character actor, Lorre's solitary foray into filmmaking was released in 1951. Shot in a film noir style, the The Lost One tells the story of Dr Rothe (Lorre) who finds himself tending to camp inmates in post-war Germany. The film retraces Rothe's role in the war, where we discover that the compassionate doctor has been hiding a dark secret. This strangely compelling film is shown with English subtitles.
