As part of the Asia House Architecture Asia series, Dr Elizabeth Darling will talk about Tokyo-born Canadian architect Wells Coates, whose buildings – which include the iconic Isokon building in Hampstead – are some of the most distinctive of the Modern Movement in British architecture. Coates is one of the pioneers of the Modern Movement in British architecture, founding one of the most important artistic movements of the period, the Modern Architectural Research Group. In this talk, Dr Darling will show how Coates synthesised particular Japanese motifs into what he described as "the visual sense of the Japanese" with the most modern of materials.
